Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) is a well-established, minimally invasive treatment for uterine fibroids — benign growths that develop within the muscular wall of the uterus. First introduced in the early 1990s as an alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy, UAE has since been refined with advancements in imaging guidance, catheter technology, and embolic materials, making it a widely accepted option worldwide.
The Uterine Artery Embolization procedure is performed by a specialized interventional radiologist in a hospital or advanced outpatient setting. Under local anesthesia and mild sedation, a small incision is made — typically in the femoral artery at the groin or, in some cases, the radial artery at the wrist. Guided by real-time fluoroscopy (X-ray imaging), a thin catheter is navigated through the vascular system into the uterine arteries.
Once the catheter tip is precisely positioned, microscopic biocompatible particles — often made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or other medical-grade polymers — are released into the vessels supplying the fibroid. These particles create a blockage, stopping the flow of oxygenated blood to the fibroid while preserving circulation to the surrounding healthy uterine tissue. Over time, the fibroid shrinks, softens, and becomes less symptomatic.
Clinical outcomes are generally very favorable. Multiple studies report symptom improvement in 85–90% of patients, including reduced menstrual bleeding, relief from pelvic discomfort, and improved quality of life. Recovery is significantly shorter than with traditional surgical options, with most women resuming normal activities within one to two weeks.
